Writers Strike: WGA Announce End to Writers Strike...
"We have a tentative deal," said Patric Verrone and Michael Winship, the two WGA leaders, in a joint letter released to union members early in the morning.
The tentative deal includes a doubling of the residual rate for movies and TV shows sold online and secures the union's jurisdiction over content created specifically for the Web, above certain budget thresholds.
Like directors, writers also would get a 3.5 percent increase in minimum pay rates for television and film work.
Rank and file writers will gather on both the East and West Coasts later in the day to get a look at the contract offer that could end the three-month-long strike that has idled most television and film production. A show-of-hands could end the strike immediately, some union officials said.
The proposed deal would run through May, 2011 and would give scale writers raises of at least 3 percent per year.
The deal designates the WGA "as the exclusive bargaining representative for writing for new media," the letter said.
The proposed contract "protects a future in which the Internet becomes the primary means of both content creation and delivery," the letter said.
"It creates formulas for revenue-based residuals in new media, provides access to deals and financial data to help us evaluate and enforce those formulas, and establishes the principle that 'when they get paid, we get paid.'"
The two presidents also said "an ongoing struggle against seven, multinational media conglomerates, no matter how successful, is exhausting, taking an enormous personal toll on our members and countless others ..."
"Continuing to strike now will not bring sufficient gains to outweigh the potential risks," they said. "The time has come to accept this contract and settle the strike."
So far there was no comment from the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents the TV networks and big movie studios.
The AMPTP estimates the strike, which began Nov. 5, has cost WGA members an estimated 273 million U.S. dollars in wages. And because production virtually ceased, the AMPTP claims other production workers represented by the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees have lost an estimated 471 million dollars.

Writers Strike: Post-Strike Return of Lost...
Let's hit the big shows first:
Lost will most likely film six more episodes for season 4. They probably won't be done in time to air in succession after the eight completed ones, and it's possible that they'll air into June. This will give season 4 a total of 14 episodes. It's unclear what they'll then do with season 5. My guess is that they'll shoot 18 episodes for the fifth season to get back on track with their prescribed season 6 end date. Regardless, this is still great news.
24 will either come back this Fall or, more likely, air its seventh season starting in January '09.
30 Rock, The Office and My Name is Earl will return to produce anywhere from five to 10 new episodes. How I Met Your Mother will film at least five new episodes.
Grey's Anatomy will produce four or five new episodes.
Most new shows, including Chuck, Life, Dirty Sexy Money and Pushing Daisies will all wait until fall to ramp up production. The one exception is Gossip Girl, which is expected to film up to nine new episodes for air in late Spring. Bionic Woman is effectively dead.
For a full look at which shows will return, check out Ausiello's report at TV Guide.

Writers Strike: Strike Definitely Over...
In addition, the note contained an outline of the specifics of the new deal, which can be downloaded here in PDF.
Taking the language of the memo at face value it is difficult to imagine that the WGA leadership is not going to tell its members to return to work Monday.
I've been talking to people on the other side of the fence for weeks now about what an end to the strike means for Lost and this is what I have for information:
* It will take 4-6 weeks to get back to actual filming.
* NO discussions have been had regarding the logistics of a return to production.
* The industry is planning on extending the TV season to the end of June.
* If the season is extended a maximum of 6 episodes could be produced.
* Regardless, a minimum of 3 new episodes will be produced.
* There has been NO discussion with regards to whether the un-produced episodes will be made up.
The most important thing to remember is that there have been no formal discussions between the LOST writers/show runners and the studios since the strike began. We shouldn't expect a boatload of answers to any of these questions for at least a few days, possibly longer.

Writers Strike: Tentative Deal reached...
"While this agreement is neither perfect nor perhaps all that we deserve for the countless hours of hard work and sacrifice, our strike has been a success," the Writers Guild of America said in a memo emailed to members.
Meetings will be held in New York and Los Angeles later on Saturday to discuss the deal's terms, the ratification process and halting the strike, the union said.
"The feeling is relief and optimism and excitement," said Hilary Winston, a writer for the NBC sitcom "My Name Is Earl."
However, she added: "I hope this deal made this three months worth it."
"It's impossible the writers will turn it down," Michael Eisner, former CECO of Walt Disney Co., told CNBC.
The strike has crippled film and television production. The Golden Globes awards show was reduced to a news conference, and some fear the Feb. 24 Academy Awards show could also be affected.
The two sides had been at loggerheads over the issue of Internet revenue sharing.
Within the next five years, most American televisions will be connected to the Internet. The shows and movies you watch on your TV will be downloaded or streamed," the union said in its strike fact sheet.
The Directors Guild of America won some concessions from the studios in the area of online media.
However, writers had been seeking 2.5 per cent of distributor grosses from content delivered over the Internet.
That's about three times what the directors got.
Directors are to be paid a maximum $1,200 flat fee for streamed, ad-supported online shows. The writers don't like that provision.
Saturday won't see a ratification vote.
If the deal is approved, new episodes of TV shows could be up to two months away.
Writing an episode takes three weeks to write and another 40 working days to produce.
However, once the show gets rolling, episodes are worked on concurrently. An hour-long show can then be produced within eight days, said Warren Leight, an executive producer in New York for NBC's "Law & Order: Criminal Intent."

Writers Strike: Coming to an End...
Thanks to Buddytv for the following...
Friday, February 08, 2008
It's coming to an end, everyone. Seriously. No lie this time. According to a variety of industry sources, the WGA and the AMPTP are set to finalize a deal this weekend that would effectively end the months-long strike and have the writers head back to work in the very near future. Nothing is official just yet, but given all the buzz about different shows returning to production, which series will return and how many episodes they'll attempt to finish by season's end, it's hard to believe that a deal isn't imminent. Where there's smoke, there's fire.
Perhaps the most overt indication of a deal being close to official came Thursday afternoon, when ex-Disney head Michale Eisner plainly and clearly declared the writers' strike finished. Speaking about the deal, Eisner stated "They've made a deal, they shook hands on a deal [and it] is going on Saturday to the constituents. It's impossible that [the writers] turn it down. A deal has been made and they will be back to work reasonably soon.”
This is a bold statement from a man who no longer runs a studio, but it's not like Eisner is known for making bold claims. All the evidence points to him being correct, and let's hope for everyone's sake that it is. With this being what it is, the question on every television fan's mind is “What does this mean for my favorite shows?” Well, it depends on the show.
Right now, the word is that popular and established series will ramp up production and attempt to film anywhere between five to ten more episodes that should air beginning in April. Lost, for instance, might be able to finish it's entire sixteen episode season. More likely, they'll get 4-6 extra episodes complete to air before summer. It's being said that all of the new series (Chuck, Pushing Daisies, etc.) will hold off on production and just re-boot come next Fall.
I'm just going to cross my fingers and hope that all the rumblings are true and that the writers return to work and start cranking out new episodes of all our favorite shows.

Writers Strike: Strike Still not Over???...
The WGA leadership is hoping to finish tonight or early tomorrow drafting the language of the deal they've negotiated with the moguls. ("Our friends at the DGA didn't leave us language that could serve as a template. In fact, the DGA has no language beyond what was in their press release because they figured they had until June to work it out," an insider tells me.)
Then the WGA intends to email to members and/or post on the WGA.org website that language so the members will have an opportunity to digest it before Saturday's meetings.
On Saturday, the WGA West membership meets at the Shrine Auditorium and the WGA East convenes at the Crown Plaza Hotel in Times Square for a definitive informational confab with the leadership. (A guild phone bank has been making calls to members today urging them to attend.) The WGA governing bodies intend to "take the temperature" and "get a sense of the room" at this time. There'll be lots of open mike time "where people can say whatever they want," I'm told. Everyone anticipates these will be very long and very contentious meetings on both coasts.
On Sunday (not Monday, as some thought), the WGAW Board and the WGAE Council both meet and will have to vote to approve any tentative deal before it goes to a membership vote. So, the WGA's Negotiating Committee, WGAW Board and WGAE Council all must approve the contract before any decision on a strike can be made. Board members tell me that, since the WGA governing bodies were authorized by the membership to call the strike, then those bodies are authorized to call it off. As I've reported previously, the moguls have insisted that the WGAW and WGAE governing bodies call off the strike before the membership ever formally votes on the contract, apparently so the CEOs, especially Disney chief Bob Iger, can count on an unpicketed and well-attended Academy Awards in 16 days.
I'm told that one of the purposes of Saturday's informational meetings is for the governing boards to decide whether the membership will approve the contract or not. This, insiders say, will determine if the bigwigs call off the strike or not.
Once the governing bodies recommend the contract and call off the strike, then procedures will kick in to send out ballots to the membership on both coasts to vote on the contract.
Of course, some snafus may occur. For instance, I'm told that if no draft language is ready in time for Saturday, "it's a very different ballgame".

Writers Strike: A Show May be doomed!...
And that is why we here at Watch with Kristin are bonding together to form an intervention for, um...you.
Wait! Please sit down and listen. This comes from a loving place. And you are surrounded by friends who care about you (see photos above).
We have reason to believe you are most likely engaging in behavior that is unhealthy, destructive and irresponsible—and must be stopped for your own good. That behavior is this: You have not been watching one of the best series on television, and now, thanks to people like you, that show is in jeopardy of cancellation (and you may have less than 24 hours to help save it).
Read on to make yourself better...
Friday Night Lights, Kyle Chandler, Taylor Kitsch
This endangered series is not Heroes or The Office or 30 Rock or Lost, but rather NBC's phenomenal drama Friday Night Lights. (And the five people in the photo at top of this page are all self-proclaimed diehard fans of the show—plus, you know, the cute one in the bottom right-hand corner stars in it)
If you don't watch this series, here is our message of tough love: The last prestrike episode of Friday Night Lights airs tomorrow (Friday) at 9 p.m. on NBC. And if you don't watch, and tell everyone you know to watch, it's possible the series will be canceled and you will loathe yourself later when you realize how great this show was, and that you are partly responsible for its demise. We want to save you from that suffering! We want to save you from yourself!
You may be asking, "If this show is so good, why is it in danger of getting the boot?" Well, fans of this series know that Friday Night Lights is one of the best-written and best-acted productions ever to grace the small screen; however, due to a lack of support from the Peacock network (these quotes from NBC president Ben Silverman will make you shudder) and nightmare time slots (first against American Idol and now in the kiss-of-death slot on Fridays), this series has yet to garner the massive audience it so richly deserves.
(Further evidence of crap timeslot: According to Nielsen reports, Friday Night Lights scored the third-biggest jump of all prime-time series in its "live" audience vs. DVR playback within a week: about 38 percent. The fans just aren't home on Friday nights.)
So where do things stand? Reps for NBC Universal Television confirm that while the original order for the current FNL season was for 22 episodes, and they have only shot 15, the future of the series has yet to be determined. "The first question is whether they will finish out the seven episodes of this season," says a studio rep. "Which will be decided after we know when the strike will end. And then the second question is whether they will get picked up for a third season, which we will find out in May."
Other Peacock-net-savvy insiders are saying more alarming things—spanning from "I hear it definitely won't be back this season" to "I hear it definitely won't be back at all."
We say, nonsense! Even if the worst-case-scenario were true, Lazarus raised the dead, CBS saved Jericho, and Family Guy found a second life, too. So, we're keeping hope alive, and here's what you can do...
Three Easy Steps to FNL Addiction/Salvation
1. Watch the Friday Night Lights Finale Tomorrow Night at 9 p.m. on NBC: You don't have to know anything in advance. This is not Lost; there's no complicated mythology to learn. If you've ever been a person, known a person or wondered about becoming a person, you'll get Friday Night Lights.
2. Watch Other Episodes: They are available on nbc.com's Episode Rewind or in the season-one DVD (a ridiculous $18.99 on Amazon.com for 22 episodes), and every single click and purchase counts. You don't even have to watch in order. If you just want to watch one to test the water, I recommend the season-one eps "Full Hearts" (Matt & Julie's first date), "Black Eyes & Broken Hearts" (I dare you not to cry at the end!), "Blinders" (the powder puff game), "Mud Bowl" (it's what it sounds like)...Hell, just watch one, and then good luck not watching them all.
3. Spread the Word! Email this article to everyone you know who needs help in seeing the Lights! Let them know you are concerned for their own well-being and that you will help them do whatever it takes to get on board with this amazing show. Then wear your Panthers number 7 jersey with pride, try to keep your drool over Taylor Kitsch to a minimum, and remember...
"Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can't Cancel!"
Now get out there and start loving Friday Night Lights and spreading the word...Before it's too late.

Writers Strike: When the Shows Will Return???...
At long last, a strike chart you can get excited about!
With an end to the three-month-old WGA strike imminent (yay!), the networks have quietly begun outlining plans to salvage what's left of the current TV season. At the same time, I've been quietly picking at my moles to get a preview of those plans — the results of which appear in chart form below.
Keep in mind that the following information remains extremely tentative and is subject to change (and probably will). In other words, I strongly suggest you refresh your browser at least once an hour to ensure that you're getting the freshest scoop possible.

Writers Strike: Strike Over???
A deal has been struck between the major media companies and the Writers Guild of America to end the writers' strike, former Walt Disney chief executive Michael Eisner revealed on CNBC."It's over," Eisner said. "They made the deal, they shook hands on the deal. It's going on Saturday to the writers in general."
Eisner, speaking live on CNBC's "Fast Money," seemed to hesitate initially about whether it was possible that the writers could still reject the agreement, but finally suggested the deal's acceptance was inevitable.
"A deal has been made, and they'll be back to work very soon," Eisner said, adding, "I know a deal's been made. I know it's over."
Eisner did not elaborate on terms of the agreement. He said he expects most of the media companies affected by the strike to have "small" write-downs as a result of the deal. Eisner said the deal was struck last Friday.
As a result of studio cutbacks, however, many of the writers who went on strike are unlikely to return to the same big-money contracts they'd had as individuals with the studios, Eisner said.
Shares of Walt Disney and CBS were both up in extended electronic trading Thursday.

Lost: Naveen on his Character...
Naveen Andrews has apparently revealed that his character in Lost, Sayid, will be seen in a whole new light in the new series.
The British actor, 39, is back on Sky One in the fourth season of the hit sci-fi show as an Iraqi and former Republican Guard Soldier.
He told The Guardian: "You'll see him in a new light and it's genuinely surprising. It took me by surprise. There is romance, but I can't say where it is or how it is. It's a bit raunchy."
Source: Guardian Newspaper UK
Lost: Latest from Kristin...
Remember the headspace Sayid was in at the beginning of the series, where he was gonna go straight and not torture people anymore and try to play nice with his fellow man? Well, in the future, that's all shot to hell. Emphasis on shot.
When I caught up tonight with Jeff Fahey (Frank the kick-ass "drunk" pilot), he told me what the fans have accused him of being God, Satan or some dude who's there to impregnate the women on the island. And the clincher? He hinted that one of those is true. What the hey? For more gorey details on that, check back next week for the video, but in the meantime...

Lost: Four New Characters...
KEN LEUNG "Miles":Lost executive producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse created the role of Miles specifically for New York City native Ken Leung after catching his live-wire performance as Uncle Junior's unstable protégé in The Sopranos last year. Before signing on to the super-secret ABC series, though, the actor — who also played the porcupine-esque Kid Omega in X-Men: The Last Stand — called up Cuse and attempted to pry some info out of him. "After our conversation," Leung admits, "I was still more or less blind." Allow us to fine-tune the picture: Miles, like The Sopranos' Carter, is a hothead, but he's a uniquely gifted one. "He's after something he can get on the island," Leung reveals. "Or somebody." The part has proven easy in one respect. "Miles doesn't know how to be social, which is great," Leung says, "because I don't know how to be social."
REBECCA MADER "Charlotte":
Lost's lone new girl, Rebecca Mader, wants to be treated like one of the boys. "People see me as a girlie-girl because I'm always in full-on hair, makeup and heels in everything I do," groans the actress, who made fashionable appearances in The Devil Wears Prada and Fox's short-lived 2006 series Justice. "I was sick of it. I have this tomboy side, and I really wanted to do action stuff." Wish granted: One of Mader's first Lost scenes found her hanging upside down from a tree. "I was so happy!" she exclaims. Likewise, her character, Charlotte — who was changed from American to British after producers met the English-born actress — is thrilled about her arrival on the island. Maybe too thrilled. Could Charlotte prove to be nefarious? "Tune in, baby," Mader says with a laugh. "It's gonna be good!"
JEFF FAHEY "Lapidus":
Jeff Fahey hadn't seen one episode of Lost before landing on the Emmy-winning drama. But that's because the veteran actor (The Lawnmower Man and the '90s series The Marshal) had taken a hiatus from Hollywood to work with orphanages in Afghanistan. While it's a pursuit the soft-spoken Fahey is passionate about, it's not one he's particularly eager to expound upon: "I don't want [it] to take focus from the show." He's chattier about playing bushy-bearded Lapidus, the pilot of the helicopter responsible for bringing the freighter folks to the island. "It's a dream job," he says, "especially for someone who's been kicking around so long." And an experience, Fahey claims, that really isn't so different from his recent off-screen endeavors. "It's fascinating to go from Kabul to living in Waikiki," he admits. "But they're all just part of the journey."
JEREMY DAVIES "Faraday":
With the twitchy delivery of one line — "Rescuing your people, can't really say it's our primary objective" — Jeremy Davies manages to send chills down the spines of the survivors of Flight 815 and viewers. The film actor (Saving Private Ryan) has a way with words off screen as well. Take his self-deprecating explanation for joining the show: "The creators of Lost are endowed with some seriously certified, god-size talent. For a misfit like me, an offer to make coffee for those gentlemen is one I'd find terribly difficult to pass up." Fortunately, producers instead asked Davies to play the mysteriously troubled, intensely intelligent Faraday, who has a proclivity for both island experiments and mumbling. It's a character Davies, who studies quantum physics for fun, has embraced. "Faraday may be contending with a seismic metamorphosis under the surface. How's that for enigmatic?"

"Dirt" and "Riches" Abrupt Season Finales...
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - There will be less "Dirt" and "Riches" on FX's schedule this year. In a sign of what's in store for TV series whose production was affected by the writers' strike, FX has opted not to produce more episodes for the two series' second seasons.
It is understood that FX's decision to cut back the episode order on "Dirt" and "The Riches" stems from economic reasons and does not affect the two series' chances for third-season renewal. The cable network already has launched a marketing campaign for the March 2 premiere of "Dirt," starring Courteney Cox. The launch date for "Riches," starring Eddie Izzard and Minnie Driver, will be announced next week.
With an end to the writers' strike in sight, one of the biggest dilemmas networks are facing is whether to resume production on all series that had been idled by the work stoppage and how many additional episodes to order of the shows they opt to bring back this season.
"Dirt" and "The Riches" ceased production in December as they ran out of scripts after completing seven episodes.

Writers Strike: Networks Prepare to Return to Work...
Talk of settlement puts contingency plans into high gear
After a three-month lull, agents' phones began ringing off the hook again Monday as word about an imminent end to the writers strike spread around Hollywood during the weekend.
The talks are still in the exploratory stage since the deal between the writers and the studios is still being finalized, but contingency plans put in place by the TV networks and studios will have existing series return on the air on average four weeks (for multicamera comedies) to six weeks (for dramas) after the official end of the strike.
How quickly each show can go back to production depends on the condition of the scripts started before the strike. The prep time needed is said to be two weeks for multicamera comedies and four weeks for more elaborate productions.
However, networks are not expected to ask every series to produce more episodes this season, which doesn't necessarily mean that those shows will be automatically canceled.
"Each network needs to decide what shows it needs for the rest of the season," one network executive said.
Some freshman and bubble series and heavily serialized dramas may not do more original episodes this season but would get pickups for next fall to give the creative team time to work on them, some sources said. Among the series rumored to possibly resume production in the summer are NBC's serialized hit "Heroes," which could do an extended run next season, and ABC's promising freshman "Pushing Daisies."
However, others cautioned that the networks may want to get more episodes of all of their series in the can as a contingency in case of a SAG strike in the summer.
Fox's "24" is among the shows expected to go back to production first. Despite the fact that the real-time drama won't air new episodes this season, it will ramp up production quickly to avoid losing some of the actors needed for the entire 24-episode arc whose options will be up soon.
Also expected to resume production quickly are ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," "Lost," "Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers & Sisters"; CBS' "CSI" franchise, "Without a Trace" and "Cold Case"; and such multicamera comedies as CBS' "Two and a Half Men" and "The Big Bang Theory" and Fox's " 'Til Death."
NBC's "The Office" has a script ready to shoot as production on the episode, which was slated to film the first week of the strike, was shut down because star Steve Carell refused to cross the picket line.
The end of the strike also will bring resolution to low-rated freshman series whose future was put in limbo because of the strike. No orders are expected for new episodes of such series as ABC's "Big Shots," CBS' "Cane," NBC's "Journeyman" and Fox's "K-Ville," though some sources indicated the jury is still out on "Cane," which has several scripts ready.
Things are murkier on the development front. All broadcast networks except NBC terminated a portion of their development last month, citing lesser needs because of the strike. The broadcast networks can still opt for a truncated pilot season, but by the time the strike is over, they will be at a point where they will have normally ordered all their pilots. To get pilots up and running, the nets will have to rely heavily on first drafts since very few scripts had been delivered before the work stoppage.
A few pilots, including Fox's "The Oaks" and NBC's movie/backdoor pilot "Knight Rider," were filmed during the strike. Several more, including NBC's "The Man of Your Dreams" and Fox's dramas "The FBI" and "Saint of Circumstance," are slated to go into production shortly after the strike ends.
Additionally, studios are prepping pitches to go out as soon as the strike is over.
An imminent end to the strike would mean virtually no disruption of cable networks' scheduling plans.
Should the strike end in the next month or so, writing would start right away on TNT's "The Closer" and "Saving Grace," which would be back on track for their summer runs as originally scheduled.
As for USA, a spokesperson said that the network's summer programming also would remain pretty much intact if the strike ends over the next few weeks. Premiere dates for certain shows likely have to be pushed back but only by a few weeks.
With the second season of "The Tudors" wrapped, filming on "Brotherhood," "Dexter" and "Californication" not scheduled to begin until June and "Weeds" in production with a waiver for producer Lionsgate, Showtime's filming schedule also won't be affected.

Writers Strike: WGA to weigh New Deal on Saturday, Writers could return soon after...
George Clooney, who was recently (and erroneously) rumored to want to personally intervene in the talks, said at a Monday taping of AMC's Shootout Oscar Special, "We're very close to having a deal. We have a tentative agreement with the writers' guild, but it needs to be ratified by the board. I think it will be."

Writers Strike: Vanity Fair Oscar Party Cancelled...
LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Vanity Fair's annual Oscars night party -- the most glamorous post-awards show event in Hollywood -- has been cancelled because of the screenwriter's strike, the magazine announced on Tuesday.
In a statement on the magazine's website, Vanity Fair said it had scrapped this year's bash, scheduled for February 24, in "support of the writers and everyone else affected by this strike."
"After much consideration ... we have decided that this is not the appropriate year to hold our annual Oscar party," the magazine said.
"We want to congratulate all of this year's nominees and we look forward to hosting our 15th Oscar party next year."
The Vanity Fair event has become the most exclusive of the myriad parties held throughout Los Angeles following the Academy Awards, with a guest list strictly limited to A-listers and VIPs.
The party's cancellation is the latest example of the three-month old writer's strike's impact on the movie industry's awards season.
Screenwriters and studios have been locked in a bitter dispute since November, when contract talks broke down and the Writers Guild of America began a strike that has paralyzed sections of the industry.
The strike has already forced the cancellation of this year's Golden Globes and there are fears that it may lead to an actors' boycott of the Oscars ceremony, despite weekend reports that a deal may soon be reached.

Lost: 4.02 Confirmed Dead Preview...
Like all great episodes of Lost, the season 4 premiere, "The Beginning of the End," left us overflowing with questions. Now that we've discussed why Hurley (Jorge Garcia) saw Charlie (Dominic Monaghan), who the Oceanic Six could be, and what the division of the castaways means for their futures, it's time to look ahead to the next new episode. This Thursday at 9pm, the mysterious freighter people will arrive on the island to either help or hurt our favorite castaways. Among this crew will be new characters played by Jeremy Davies, Rebecca Mader, Jeff Fahey, and Ken Leung. We may have no clue what their intentions are, but that doesn't mean we can't speculate.
ABC has released an exciting new promo trailer for the episode, which offers tantalizing glimpses of the new arrivals, as well as a quick look at wreckage of Flight 815.
The promo starts by reminding us that it's never too late to get Lost. ABC tends to say that a lot, and I know they want new viewers to just jump in any time, but Lost really doesn't seem like the type of show that you can start watching in the fourth season. I think it's way too late to get Lost, unless you hurry and watch the first three seasons on DVD.
Anyway, as the trailer begins we see the arrival of Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies), who was the first man to land on the island last week. Ben warns that the rescuers are a threat as we see someone falling from the sky and landing in the water. This is followed by a voice stating, "Oh my God. It's Oceanic 815." We then get a really swift glimpse of the 815 plane wreckage, which was also seen in the Oceanic Golden Pass commercial that aired during Eli Stone last week.
The rest of the trailer shows the Hydra logo, Sawyer (Josh Holloway) giving Ben (Michael Emerson) a beating, a quick shot of an animal skull, Locke (Terry O'Quinn) taking a stand, and Miles (Ken Leung) promising to tell the castaways why his crew has come to the island.
It's an exciting promo, and definitely offers enough interesting material to keep us talking until tomorrow night. Will someone be going to the Hydra station? What's up with the animal skull, which was also seen in an earlier Lost promo? And the biggest question of all, what do the freighter people want with the castaways?
We'll hopefully get answers to all of these questions when "Confirmed Dead" airs Thursday at 9pm on ABC.

I just don't have any definitive answer because I haven't been talking to them… The second we're told that we can go back to work, I'm going to give [Peacock honcho] Ben Silverman a call and say, 'Scrubs has been on NBC for seven years, and it would really be a bummer if I didn't get to end it there.' And I'm hoping I'll get a positive response. I would be surprised if NBC didn't want to figure out a way to end the series on their network." I wish I could be as optimistic. Remember, this is Ben Silverman we're talking about. The same dude who publicly dissed Friday Night Lights. But more on that later….

Desperate Housewives: Latest from Ausiello...
Ausiello: Guess what I found out on Friday: The scoopiest morsel from my interview with James Denton on the SAG red carpet was left on the cutting-room floor! Good thing I had my tape recorder running the entire time, 'cause he revealed that when Housewives returns post-strike, we'll finally get to the bottom of the two-year-old mystery of why Orson ran Mike down in his car. "That storyline changed," he told me. "Originally, Orson was going to be the really bad guy. But then everybody fell in love with Kyle and wanted to keep him around, so Dixie Carter kind of took the fall for him. But now he's got some 'splainin' to do."

James in Dover, Maine: You said Heather on Jericho was going to be a hero. What does that mean?
It means that if she knows other people are in danger, she does everything she can to save them. She's not exactly throwing herself in front of a bullet, but almost.

Kiran in New York City: Can you tell us anything about Emily Rose's character on Jericho? I loved her on John from Cincinnati.
She's a good egg in a bad environment. I think you'll really like her in this.

Lost: Latest from Ausiello...
Ausiello: I loved it as well. It wasn't the big slice of heaven that was last May's game-changing finale, but it was easily one of the best hours of TV so far this season. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for tomorrow night's episode, which would've merited a solid three and a half stars were it not for two annoying blunders — one of which should've been caught by Lost's typically crackerjack continuity police, and another that dumbs down the 815ers to the point where the castaways on Gilligan's Island look smart by comparison. I'm anxious to get your thoughts.
Question: I miss Juliet like a hard drug! What is she up to this season on Lost? Will we see more of her in the upcoming episodes? — Sam
Ausiello: A decent Juliet fix awaits you tomorrow night. Not only is there a nice little scene with her and Sayid on the beach, but she ends up saving the day — much to Kate's chagrin. Speaking of which, there's a Kate/Jack/Juliet moment that will have you peeing your pantaloons. It's that funny. It's also pretty subtle, so your full attention will be required.
Question: I'm sure you'll get hundreds of questions about the Oceanic 6, so I'll add my name to the list. Since I imagine the names of the other three members of the Oceanic 6 are too much to ask for, how about the genders? — Amy
Ausiello: One of the remaining three has male genitalia. How's that?

One Tree Hill: Latest from Ausiello...
Ausiello: Three things — all of them regarding the Feb. 19 episode.
• We'll finally hear someone other than Lucas deliver the episode-closing voice-over.
• A beloved staple of the series will be no more once Peyton decides that it's time to shut the door on her past.
• Haley will let two characters have it for "lying and cheating" after witnessing an illicit kiss, while completely missing one that could end a marriage.

Eli Stone: Latest from Ausiello...
Ausiello: You can expect an unbilled cameo from a certain Melrose Place icon (hint: it's not a person, but a thing). And you thought Eli's George Michael hallucinations were out there: Tomorrow night, he gets a ringside seat to a Broadway-esque musical and World War II.

Moonlight: Latest from Ausiello...
Ausiello: That's assuming it comes back in the fall. And that's a big assumption at this point. I spoke to a Moonlight insider late last week and he/she told me that before the strike, CBS informed producers that they had every intention of picking up the show's "back nine." But since the strike started, they haven't heard a peep about whether they'll be going back into production. My guess? Moonlight will be renewed for a 13-episode second season.
Source: TV Guide
Friday Night Lights: Latest from Ausiello...
Ausiello: Nope. NBC confirmed as much when they leaked unofficially announced the news that the Season 2 DVD — featuring all 15 episodes — was being released on April 22. I don't remember the last time a piece of DVD news left me so depressed. Oh, wait, yes I do.
Question: Did you read what Ben Silverman said about Friday Night Lights returning for a third season? Is it time for a fan campaign? — Elizabeth
Ausiello: I say we skip the campaign and go right to the ass-whoopin'. Does he have any idea who he's messing with?!?! My last name is Ausiello, for chrissakes. And I grew up in Jersey. And my dad was in waste management.
Question: What do you have for what could be the last-ever episode of Friday Night Lights? — Ann
Ausiello: The same thing I've had for months: A pregnancy bombshell that no one will see coming. (And I know, because I've spent the last five weeks reading all your guesses.) And all joking aside, if NBC even considers pulling the plug on FNL, they better board up their windows, 'cause a sh--storm's gonna blow into town. In fact, the National Weather Service has already given it a name: Hurricane Ausholes.

Dirty Sexy Money: Latest from Ausiello...
Ausiello: It's looking like September, unfortunately. Although ABC isn't talking, my Sexy spies tell me that the Alphabet net will likely order 13 episodes of DSM for the fall, with the three unaired hours from this season kicking off that run. Sort of like what ABC did with Men in Trees, only without the schizophrenic scheduling. I hope.

Writers Strike Close to Ending...
LOS ANGELES -
An agreement to end the three-month-old Hollywood writers strike could be ready in time to avoid disrupting the Oscars but studios and the union are still haggling over the precise language, two people familiar with the talks said.
The Writers Guild of America bargaining committee and board of directors received updates on the status of informal talks with studio executives, the pair said Monday. They were not authorized to comment publicly and requested anonymity.
One of the people has said a formal deal is possible by the end of this week.
There was significant progress toward a proposed agreement last week on the toughest issues concerning compensation for projects distributed via the Internet.
While specifics of the negotiations were not disclosed, the proposal agreement is believed to include significant increases in the residuals that writers get for online use of movies and TV shows.
Last month, studios reached a tentative deal with the Directors Guild of America that included increased residuals for some paid Internet downloads and for ad-supported streaming of programs.
The informal talks are essentially a substitute for the formal negotiations between writers and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers that broke off on Dec. 7. Writers struck on Nov. 5.
The guild and the studios repeatedly have declined comment on the talks, citing a news blackout.
But stars attending an Academy Awards luncheon on Monday seemed optimistic that a deal would be reached in time for the Feb. 24 Oscar show.
"I'm a positive individual. I think the sun will come up tomorrow," said Viggo Mortensen, a best-actor contender for the crime tale "Eastern Promises."
The guild has declined to grant striking writers permission to work on the show. While organizers have said they would offer some kind of Oscar show anyway, some stars said they wouldn't cross picket lines to attend.
The strike also has shut down production on some major TV shows.
Michael Moore, a WGA member nominated for his health-care documentary, "Sicko," blamed the studios and said they had "shut the town down over a couple pennies."
Moore said if no agreement is reached, he might start a penny drive to raise the money for writer demands, and suggested people would contribute in order to see their favorite shows return.
Associated Press Movie Writer David Germain contributed to this report.

Lost: Latest from Kristin...
Me too! She's now all dead, but she is, let's say, a presence in the next two episodes (at least).
Dave in St. George, Utah: So, what's up with these freighter people?
There are four of them, and the one that wasn't credited as a regular in the season premiere is my personal fave. Two of the others remind me of Sawyer (snarky and kind of mean) and Juliet (beautiful and capable), and the fourth? Well, before too long he's gonna be truuuh-bul.
Emmy on Louisville, Kentucky: Can you tell us any more about this "fascinating" Sawyer-Kate scene in episode three?
In the Island's big game of capture the flag, Kate gets tagged out by the other team and sent to "jail." Lucky for her, she's in good with the jailer...
Masha in Miami: Any news on Ben's relationship with Locke this season?
Well, before too long, it's better than Locke's relationship with Jack.
Janet in Eugene, Oregon: That was a great Hurley interview, but you forgot the biggest question of them all. What was with the Eskimo watercolor painting he was drawing? Was that an Easter egg?
Funny. Jorge himself brought that up and said that if anyone asks, he wanted everyone to know that that painting is hugely important because it was drawn by...Jorge himself. “I just thought to myself, what would Hurley be drawing? And given that he didn’t want an ocean view and wanted to be as far away from the island as possible, that seemed like the farthest place.” That's all it meant, according to J.G.

Stargate Atlantis: Production on Season 5 Starts...
As Atlantis speeds toward its centennial episode, the Stargate universe promises new and surprising developments. The status quo is shaken following the events of season 4 (currently airing on SCI FI, Friday nights at 10pm) – some cherished friends are lost, others are found. New alliances are forged while new races are introduced.
Robert Picardo, whom Stargate fans will recognize as International Oversight Committee rep "Richard Woolsey," joins the Stargate Atlantis cast this season as Woolsey assumes command of the Atlantis expedition. The team, led by Lt. Colonel Sheppard (Joe Flanigan), Dr. Rodney McKay (David Hewlett), Teyla (Rachel Luttrell), Ronon (Jason Momoa) and Dr. Jennifer Keller (Jewel Staite), must adjust to his unique leadership style.
Fan favorite Paul McGillion, will return for five episodes to reprise his role as the beloved "Dr. Carson Beckett." Amanda Tapping ("Colonel Samantha Carter"), who remains a fixture of the Stargate universe, will appear as a special guest star in several episodes this season and Stargate SG-1 star Michael Shanks ("Dr. Daniel Jackson") will appear as a special guest in episodes as well.
Stargate Atlantis follows the adventures of an intrepid team of military and civilian explorers who travel the distant Pegasus galaxy by means of a Stargate, a portal created long ago by a highly advanced alien civilization called the Ancients. In their never-ending quest to seek out other technologies left behind by the Ancients, the Atlantis team encounters alien cultures – some friend, some foe.
The series is executive produced by Brad Wright, Robert Cooper, Joseph Mallozzi, Paul Mullie, Carl Binder, and Martin Gero. Mallozzi and Mullie share the reins as showrunners.

Personally, I'm still getting over Lafferty's haircut. (I liked him dirty and shaggy—you?) But in more important, serious and jaw-dropping matters, I'm hearing of a wedding (I'm sure you know who), a kidnapping (so not good), a breakup (supericky) and what appears to be some kind of jailbreak (gaaah—we have so not seen the last of Dan this season). Also, there is a big Lucas/Peyton blowout in tomorrow night's episode.

Seriously! Anyway, putting aside talk of "the singularity" for a minute, I can tell you that, according to Summer Glau, Cameron may not be about what she says she's about. On Friday, she told me, "It's a mystery at this point if Cameron's intentions are what she presents them to be. I don’t even really know what's going on with Cameron. I do know that maybe she has a mysterious past. And it's unclear what she ends up being in the future. But at this point, I think that all three of us, as far as what I know from the script, we are all fighting for the same goal, but that might turn out to be sort of a front. Cameron might have come back from the past for a different purpose." Hmmm...
Phil in Yukon, Oklahoma: Please, some Terminator love! Thank you!
Summer Glau also told me, "I'm really proud of this week's episode. It's one of our biggest action episodes. We have two new Terminators coming into play, one played by Brian Bloom. It's huge, and we worked so hard on this episode."

I would agree with you, except I had the pleasure of meeting Jaimie Alexander (who plays Jessi) at that BlackBerry Pearl party, and she was very cool. She told me that when she read last week’s script, she said, “What the hell? I thought I was going to be good now!” She revealed that Jessi goes back and forth between good and evil all season, mostly because she’s dealing with the fact that no one loves her except for Kyle. As for getting rid of her, it ain’t happening. Jaimie has already signed on for season three.

They don’t reunite before the end of the season, but he seemed quite sure it will happen, provided they get a third year. In the meantime, Bryan said we can look forward to more drama between the two of them in the remaining episodes that were already shot.

Writers' Strike: Latest from Kristin...
Grrr, argh...
So, as reported right here in this column, the widespread rumor reverberating through Hollywood over the weekend was that the WGA-AMPTP deal was "done," and all that was left before the strike was officially over was to dot the i's and cross the t's.
Giddy over this prospect, we fanned out to interrogate some folks on the writers' side about what this means for the rest of the TV season.
Emails came back as a mixture of "Say wha?" and "Says who?" Huh.
Then came the letter from WGA president Patric Verrone to members, which said, essentially, that it ain't over till it's over. "We are still in talks and do not yet have a contract," Verrone wrote. "Picketing will resume on Monday." Damn.
After interviewing multiple sources close to the negotiations yesterday and today, it has become clear there are a couple of remaining issues on the table.
Among them, according to sources, is an established length of proposed "promotional clips" that the studios and networks could use free of charge under the new agreement. (Is a "clip" 20 seconds? Two minutes? All 22 minutes of an episode of 30 Rock?) That length was not determined in the DGA deal.
So, why the widespread word on Saturday that the deal was done? (According to Nikki Finke's blog at deadlinehollywooddaily.com, Peter Chernin was telling people at the Super Bowl yesterday that "the strike was over," which is exactly what everyone else in Hollywood was hearing.)
One longtime screenwriter close to the negotiations lobs this allegation: "We think [the AMPTP] sent out the message that the strike is over to try and weaken our resolve. Why else would anyone try to announce anything before it is actually over?"
The AMPTP also went on record today to deny rumors of a done deal, though an AMPTP source also told time.com to "stay tuned."
Meanwhile, a nonpartisan, looky-loo commuter just texted in to tell us: "Just drove past Paramount [Studios], and the [WGA] picketers are out in full force. They are stronger than I've seen in many weeks."
Where do things stand now? Well, the writers have the very big stick of an Oscar picket line. The producers wield the weighty bat of "Work stoppages hurt the little guy most."
Will this standoff have a swift resolution, or could the cold war between the two sides drag on—or worse, get downright hot? Give us your thoughts in the Comments section below.
And say a little prayer for our good friend Mr. Television while you're at it.

Writers' Strike: Letter from the Presidents...
This was sent today by WGA Presidents Patric Verrone and Michael Winship to membership:
To Our Fellow Members,
While fully mindful of the continuing media blackout, we write you to address the rumors and reports that undoubtedly you have been hearing.
The facts: we are still in talks and do not yet have a contract. When and if a tentative agreement is reached, the first thing we will do is alert our membership with an e-mail message. Until then, please disregard rumors about either the existence of an agreement or its terms.
Until we have reached an agreement with the AMPTP, it is essential that we continue to show our resolve, solidarity, and strength.
Picketing will resume on Monday. Our leverage at the bargaining table is directly affected by your commitment to our cause. Please continue to show your support on the line. We are all in this together.
Best,
Patric M. Verrone
President, WGAW
Michael Winship

Breaking: Writers' Strike End Imminent...
According to reliable insiders who asked not to be named, the writers and producers were in talks for nine hours yesterday and made a "staggering amount of progress," as all of the major sticking points have been settled.
"We are 99.9 percent of the way there," one source inside the negotiations said. "As of late yesterday, just a few small issues remained."
The stickiest issue of all, compensation for new-media projects, has been agreed upon by both sides, according to sources. Said one: "There is most certainly light at the end of the tunnel, and we are rapidly approaching it."
Stay tuned, and keep those fingers crossed. An announcement could come any minute.

Writers' to End the Strike...
The newspaper, quoting unnamed sources familiar with the negotiations, Saturday said a new contract could be presented as soon as Friday to the striking Writers Guild of America.
The writers are insisting on more payment to cover their work released on the Internet and other new media.
Reports said attorneys from the studios and the guild were meeting this weekend to work out language for the proposed agreement, which first go to the board and then for ratification by the union's 10,500 members.
The strike has halted film production for cinema and television, and pulled the glamour rug out under Hollywood's hot awards season, turning the usually gala Golden Globes awards last month into a mere press conference and raising questions about the fate of the Academy Awards ceremony February 24.
Not only are there no writers to create clever wording for presentations, but also the actors and actresses have been refusing to cross the strike line.
On January 18, Hollywood directors reached a new three-year pay deal with the main producer's organisation to cover new media production. The directors were not on strike but the agreement was seen as a possible template for an agreement with the writers.

Stargate Atlantis: Upcoming Episode Details...
First up is "Trio," which focuses on Rodney McKay, Samantha Carter, and Jennifer Keller. The episode airs Friday, February 8. Here's how the network describes the episode:
Col. Samantha Carter joins Dr. McKay and Dr. Keller on a mission to convince the inhabitants of an off-world village rocked by frequent tremors, to move to a more stable part of the continent. But en route to the village, Dr. McKay plunges into a sinkhole, falling twenty feet to the bottom of a large subterranean chamber. Crawling to the edge of the rupture, Carter and Dr. Keller are relieved to see that McKay is unhurt. Suddenly, they feel the ground beneath them give way and they too drop out of sight.
Realizing that they have fallen into a section of an old Genii mining facility they begin to search for a way out. But every attempt to escape the confines of the chamber seems to put them in further jeopardy, underscored by the constant tremors that shake their prison with ever greater force.
In "Midway," Sam invites her old friend Teal'c (guest star Christopher Judge) to Atlantis to coach Ronon, who is under review by the I.O.A.:
Mr. Coolidge is the newest member of the I.O.A. and openly distrustful of alien participation in any facet of the Stargate program. Despite his bias, the I.O.A. has entrusted him with interviewing Teyla Emmagan and Ronon Dex about their suitability to continue as members of the Atlantis expedition. This does not bode well for Ronon, who is next on the list to travel to Earth for questioning.
Colonel Carter, concerned that Ronan's temper will explode under intense cross-examination, asks an old friend to travel to Atlantis to serve as his mentor -- Teal'c, of the Jaffa. But Ronon, insulted by the implication that he can't handle himself, makes no effort to befriend Teal'c and their stay on the Midway station, en route to Earth, does little to improve the situation. Unbeknownst to anyone, a plan by the Wraith to invade the Midway station is about to be initiated, and an interview with Mr. Coolidge will be the very least of their problems.
"Midway" will premiere February 15 on SCI FI! Don't miss new episodes every Friday night at 10 p.m. (9 Central) on SCI FI Channel in the United States, and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Sky One in the U.K.

Lost Returns with a Big Bang...
The fourth-season premiere of ABC’s “Lost” delivered the best numbers in more than a year for the hit mystery drama last night, lifting the network to an easy first-place finish on the first night of sweeps.
“Lost” averaged a 6.7 adults 18-49 rating, according to Nielsen overnights, the show’s best rating since its November 2006 fall finale. It also drew 16.1 million total viewers, its best number since November 2006.
The show was 16 percent above last May’s 5.9 18-49 season finale average and 14 percent above its full-season average of 5.9. Last spring it aired at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
“Lost” also knocked out its toughest competition, NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” which posted a season-low 2.8 rating at 9 p.m., down 24 percent from last week’s 3.7. The second hour of “Apprentice” did perk up to a 3.6.
“Lost” gave the series premiere of “Eli Stone” a nice boost at 10 p.m. as well. The show averaged a 4.2 rating, holding only 63 percent of “Lost’s” audience but easily winning the timeslot.
That helped ABC to a dominant victory last night, marking just the second time since 1991 that the network won the opening night of February sweeps.
ABC averaged a 5.3 average overnight rating and a 14 share. Fox was second at 3.2/8, NBC third at 2.8/7, CBS fourth at 2.4/6, Univision fifth at 1.6/4 and CW sixth at 1.4/4.
ABC led each hour of the night, beginning with a 4.9 at 8 p.m. for a “Lost” clip show. Fox was second that hour with a 3.1 for “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?,” with Univision and NBC tied for third at 2.1, Univision for “Al Diablo con los Guapos” and NBC for repeats of “My Name is Earl” and “The Office.” CBS was fifth with a 1.9 for a repeat of “CSI: NY” and CW sixth with a 1.6 for “Smallville.”
At 9 p.m. ABC led again with a 6.7 for “Lost,” while Fox was second again with a 3.3 for “Don’t Forget the Lyrics.” CBS and NBC tied for third at 2.8, CBS for a “CSI” rerun and NBC for “Apprentice,” with Univision fifth with a 1.6 for “Pasion” and CW sixth with a 1.3 for “Supernatural.”
ABC completed the nightly sweep with a 4.2 at 10 p.m. for “Stone,” followed by NBC with a 3.6 for its second half of “Apprentice.” CBS was third with a 2.4 for a repeat of “Without a Trace” and Univision fourth with a 1.2 for “Amas de Casa Desperadas.”
Among households, ABC led the night with an 8.3 average overnight rating and a 13 share. CBS was second at 6.9/11, Fox third at 6.2/9, NBC fourth at 4.5/7, CW fifth at 2.1/3 and Univision sixth at 1.9/3.

Lost: Article from NYMag...
Jack: Thinking about growing a beard.
Hurley: You'd look weird with a beard, dude.
Awwww, the very first episode of the season, and it centers around Hurley, the survivor with the biggest heart and the biggest (and most improbable) gut! Since Hurley is one of the few actively good characters on the show — loves his grandma; generous to a fault; no known history of grifting, adultery, drug-dealing, torture, fomenting genocide, stealing kidneys, or slipping drugs to pregnant ladies — putting this fuzzy, greasy bad-luck-magnet at the episode's center sets up the season perfectly, not least because it momentarily disguises the freaky DARKNESS of the show's new structure.
Because it turns out that flash forwards are far more grim than flashbacks. Mainly because they suggest that searing regret lies just two feet ahead, narratively speaking, from any fantasies-of-escape island celebrations. Apparently, only six people have made it back to the mainland: the Oceanic Six. There's Jack, Kate, and Hurley — plus whoever is in that coffin and two others, and they're quasi-celebrities (The Surreal Life: Black Rock?) Oh, and they've apparently made some deal with the devil that is torturing them with regret and making them talk in mysterious abstractions. Shame about that.
The Future: Pre–Jack Beard
The episode starts out in the “future” (and we're going to need to develop some bold new terms here, because this FF takes place before the earlier FF, which makes it, what? A flashback from a flash-forward? There must be a German term for this). Jack, a chip off the old block, is beardless and pouring himself a refreshing morning screwdriver. He's notably not surrounded by maps, suicidal, or driving around all oxy'd up and listening to Nirvana.
Instead, Hurley is the crazy one: He's seen the ghost of Charlie in a convenience store. After subsequently hallucinating a wetsuited Charlie crashing through a window in a police station and lying to a cop about knowing Ana Lucia, Hurley is happily tossed into a mental hospital to doodle igloos in peace. No dice: He's promptly pursued first by that cadaverous guy from The Wire (who now works for Oceanic Airlines, apparently even more corrupt than the city of Baltimore), then nagged by Charlie's Ghost (looking surprisingly hot), and finally, challenged to a game of H.O.R.SE. by Cleanshaven Jack, who is apparently in on whatever freaky deal these guys made with whatever devil they dealt with before or after or during their escape from the island but will only reference in roundabout, crazy-making Dark Secret dialogue.
Like an endless procession of Ghosts of Islands Past, each visitor engages poor Hurley in oblique manipulation: Wire Guy scares him, Charlie guilts him out, and Jack seems to be trying to make sure Hurley isn't going to spill their Dark Secret. “I don't think we did the right thing, Jack. It wants us to go back,” says Hurley. WHO WHAT WHA?
The Present: Post-Charlie
Meanwhile, or rather, way earlier, Desmond has returned to deliver the bad news: Charlie's dead and that's not Penny's boat. After some grieving and hiking and bickering, everyone gathers to debate: the Jackians (who are excitedly anticipating rescue); the sharpshooters and rescuers from the beach (who believe it's all a trap); tied-up Ben (who says they're all gonna die); Crazy Rousseau, who smacks Ben in the nose; and Alex and Karl. (Naomi, meanwhile, dies after slinking off into the woods with a knife in her back.) Oh, and John Locke, who says it's all a trap and they're all gonna die and everyone should follow him.
As they do every ten episodes or so, the survivors split bitterly in half! And so do our sympathies.
Because let's look at the big picture here: On Jack's side, we've got Kate, Juliet, Sayid, Sun, Jin, Rose, and Bernard. In other words, one love triangle pivoting on a prissy surgical bossypants, plus two happily married couples — plus Sayid, who is fantastic and does sway us a bit. (Desmond should be with them, too, but we got kind of confused and couldn't figure out where he ended up.)
But on Locke's side, there's Hurley, Sawyer, Claire, Aaron, Rousseau, Ben, Alex, and Karl — all the insane and most of the single people! Plus a very cute baby. GO TEAM LOCKE! There's great mind-game potential there, since the most tender characters (Claire and Hurley and Alex) are combined with the most insane mind-game masters (Locke, Sawyer, Ben and Rousseau). Besides, Alex can babysit Aaron, and Rousseau can have Moonlighting chemistry with her stolen daughter's adopted father.
As ever, Ben gets all the funniest line-readings: “Jack, with your permission, I'd like to go with John.”
But the best scene occurs just before this whole showdown, when poor Hurley stumbles into a horror movie: Using mere glimpses of a rickety shack, ANOTHER rickety shack, a silhouetted figure in a rocking chair, and then a big scary eye in a window, we were freaked out and baffled, and fine with it. Or at least, baffled until we saw the work of freeze-framers online.
What We Know Now
Jack is willing to shoot Locke right in his big scarred moon face.
At least some of the Locke followers do leave the island, since Hurley is among the Oceanic Six.
Hug Kate once, shame on Kate; hug Kate twice, shame on you.
The Wha? Factor
What happened to the other survivors?
What’s the deal with the guy in the rocking chair?
Whose BIG FREAKY EYE WAS THAT?
And what is that guy from Spanking the Monkey doing on the island?
And Jack's Dad is — what? ALIVE? Undead? Has some sort of evil Bucket List relationship with Jacob? IS Jacob? —Emily Nussbaum

Lost: More from Eonline...
Lost is back. And so are some of its fans.
Thursday night's season premiere averaged 16.1 million viewers, up nearly 2.5 million viewers over its third-season average, according to Nielsen Media Research estimates.
As ABC's competition can attest, the performance was also Lost's least watched premiere ever, down nearly 3 million viewers from its third-season opener.
So, to recap: The show was up and down.
But, really, it was up.
After 18.8 million tuned in for Lost's third-season premiere in the fall of 2006, the show slumped. Last May's cliffhanger finale, which was well-received and viewed as a sign the show was creatively back on track, averaged 13.9 million; for the season, the show averaged 13.8 million, an all-time low.
Thursday's episode came after cocreator J.J. Abrams' crew assured fans that they did, too, know how the mysterious saga of airplane crash survivors was going and, indeed, where it will end. They even gave a date: 2010.
In what was billed as another sop to fans, ABC delayed Lost's premiere until the winter to let the fourth season run week in, week out through May (and to allow the network to order only 16, not 22, episodes). Then came the writers' strike, and only eight completed episodes, but still...
With Thursday's opener filling in the picture on the "Oceanic Six," the castaways we're told who made it back to the mainland, the series has the blogosphere squarely in its corner again.
* "The return of Lost was worth a nine-month wait," Remote Access said.
* "The episode was pretty much a masterpiece," said BuddyTV.
* "I loved the premiere," went a user comment on TVSquad. "I wished it was really two hours instead of the fake advertising by ABC making it seem like it was a two-hour premiere."
Yes, about that two-hour premiere...
It was a two-hour premiere night, with a recap episode airing at 8 p.m. and the real thing airing at 9 p.m.
The plan worked for ABC, which scored 13.1 million viewers for the recap—a number that last week would have placed the clip show in the top 10.
All of the goodwill for Lost rubbed off, to a degree, on Eli Stone.
The new fantasy series about a lawyer who develops a conscience won its 10-11 p.m. time slot, averaging 11.6 million viewers. The stats would look more impressive if Eli Stone hadn't (a) squandered more than 25 percent of its Lost lead-in and (b) started almost exactly where The Nine started last season.
Just so you know, for ratings purposes, it's better to be compared to the Oceanic Six than The Nine.

Lost: More from Eonline...
If you haven't yet seen tonight's episode, for the love of all that is good and holy, please do not read this. But if you have, wheee! Cannonball in here, and come along for the ride...
It was awesome, was it not?
No disrespect to any other series, but tonight's return of Lost was so well written, produced, acted and directed it felt like a movie amid the underwhelming sea of Television 101 college projects that have been airing during the strike. (Yes, there are a few exceptions, but still.)
More important, after a third season that left quite a few fans feeling unsatisfied from time to time, producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse seemed to have sent us a clear message: The show you once loved and obsessed over and couldn’t stop thinking about is back. Boo. Freaking. Ya.
WHAT WE LEARNED
The heart is back. (God bless you, Jorge Garcia.)
The tears are back. (Hurley telling Claire about Charlie = heartbreaking.)
The soilers are back. (The glass breaks! Charlie reappears! Jack shoots Locke! Sort of!)
The Losties we love are back. (The whole gang reuniting at the front of the plane? Ahhh! Tell me that scene wasn’t made of pure gold.)
I’m, um, a little excited to have something to be excited about, in case you didn’t notice. Now for the juicy part...
Death Becomes Charlie: How freaking awesome was Dominic Monaghan's surprise return and that scene with Hurley? Charlie looked so hot and confident and cool—like a bona fide rock star!—that I had to text some love to Dom and tell him so. He shot back: "Sooo glad you liked the NEW Charlie." He said when he decided to return, he knew "it must be a revolutionized Charles." Smart man! The new Charlie rocks.
The Credits Were Suspicious: Not only did Charlie make a fantastic reappearance, but it was truly heartwarming to see Dominic Monaghan and Harold Perrineau listed alphabetically as full-fledged castmembers in the opening credits, was it not? Did you notice John Terry was listed as a guest star? Did you see him in the rocking chair in the disappearing cabin with a painting of a dog and somebody's eyeball?! Also, at risk of ruining minisode 13, I'll use that as a segue to "So It Begins," which is below, and which you must see if you haven't already. Then, of course, discuss the insane implications of this in the Comments. Just as soon as your head stops spinning, of course.
Father Benjamin: Regarding Ben's ongoing prophecies of death and destruction, I'm gonna hafta quote the sage Xander Harris: "Generally speaking, when scary things get scared? Not good."
Love Means Never Having to Say You're Sorry: Did anyone else find it distressing in the extreme that Hurley apologized for going with Locke lo those many years ago? Remember when the big questions were "Guys, where are we?" and "Who are we?" and "What is this place?" I think that the question of the season—now that we have flashforwards—is "What the hell happened on that damn island?"
Biggest Question of the Night: Lance Reddick's character Matthew Abbadon (anagrams include: What Bad Boat Men?) asked what I consider to be the question of the night: "Are they still alive?" If the Oceanic Six (Hurley, Jack, Kate and three players to be named later) are back in the world, where are the rest of our beloved Oceanic survivors? Not to mention your native Ben-Karl-Alex-Danielle-Juliet-Desmond types. Abbadon's question, not to mention Hurley believing that Jack wanted to find out if he "was gonna tell," not to mention Charlie telling Hurley that he's needed, would seem to suggest there are still survivors living on the island (or somewhere), and they are threated or endangered in some way. "Are they still alive?" leads directly to so many other questions. How'd the Six escape? Why were some left behind? Will the Six go back? Can the Six go back? We'll find out sometime over the 47 episodes left to go. Eee!
Anagrams Are So 2004: In Biblical terms, Abbadon is a dude Wikipedia describes as "the destroying angel of the apocalypse." Bet that's not his Oceanic Airlines business card.
More Things to See and Do: Notice it was Action 8 News? There ain't no Channel 8 in L.A., but it sure is one of the numbers. Also, Big Mike had a crush on his partner Ana-Lucia—what the hell? And did anyone else think that Hurley puttering about in his red bathrobe at Santa Rosa looked a lot like a red-robed Hurley the Baptist from Charlie's "save the baby" dream in the season-two episode "Fire + Water"? And last but not least, the Sharpie strikes again: According to Lostpedia, the diver in the mirror was Charlie, and this time his hand says "They need you."
WHAT LIES AHEAD
Next week is one of the unusual episodes that come around every so often, like "The Other 48 Days," in which we get a big download about a new element being introduced to the show. There will also be beatings, subterfuge and gunplay. We'll see a lot of the island, an important new number is added to the show's mythology, and there will be some new visitors to what Kate once called the Wonderful World of Not Knowing What the Hell Is Goin' On.

Lost: Jorge Garcia Spills Secrets...
Some Spoilers Below...
If you’re a Lost fan who watched last night’s episode, you must read this. My bat phone just rang up with Jorge Garcia on the other end to talk about Hurley’s mental status, Dominic Monaghan’s return and some things no one knows about last night's episode, including who was really in the chair in Jacob's house when they shot it. (Shhh!)
Read on for all the goods...
All I’ve wanted to do since last night is give Hurley a hug.
Really?
That was a fantastic episode, and you knocked it out of the park. I laughed when you cannonballed. I cried when you broke the news to Claire. Your performance was better than ever, and I know the fans loved it.
Wow. Thank you. That’s really good to hear. I felt good about that episode. When I got the script, it was like the heart of the show was back. And even more than that, I felt like—as soon as we all got our scripts for that premiere—that sense of "Oh my god did you read it?" or "Did you get the next script?" was back, just like we were back in season one. We couldn’t wait for the next script.
There was some creepy stuff in that episode. It took us a while to figure out where John Terry (Jack’s father) was. And then Damon said to "look for the white shoes" and it was like, "Holy crap! Jack’s dad is in Jacob’s house!"
Me too. That wasn’t the way it was in the script. There was someone else in the chair.
What? Really? Was it a different person, or they didn’t tell you who was in the chair?
We shot it with someone else in the chair.
Are you allowed to say who was in the chair originally?
Yeah. I think so. It was me. I was in the chair when we shot it.
Crazy town! Why did they change it?
I don’t know. At first I thought maybe they decided that putting Jack’s father there was a much better twist, which it was, so they changed it. But now I think maybe they planned that all along and didn’t want to have it in the script because they didn’t want anyone to know about it.
So, it seems the producers are getting very crafty in keeping those secrets.
Yeah, I think so. I know that when guest stars come on, they’ll have them read with one actor and a script, and then when they get it, it’s a totally different script and scene and actor. And last night, the scene in the police department also was different. When we shot it, it was an aquarium. Like, a real aquarium. And none of us knew it would be Charlie inside there. They added that later on.
Well, that was a great twist, too. Did you hear about what was written on his hand? "They Need You."
Oh, cool. I think that's what he said to me at the asylum.
So, how was it for you shooting that scene with Dominic? Was it a nice surprise for you all that he would be coming back?
Definitely. A lot of people have said that they felt Charlie and Hurley were really the most solid relationship on the island. And so to have him come back was just very cool. And I liked that he was sort of a better version of Charlie. A lot of people, when they die on our show, like with Ian, they come back and they are like the heaven version of themselves. How they would want to be.
Do you think that Hurley is really mentally ill? Or is there some mystical element from the island making him see things?
In [last night’s] episode, I was playing it that Hurley was so haunted by Charlie and by Charlie’s last words that he couldn’t get past it. And so he wanted to go to the one place, the last place where he felt safe, and that was Santa Rosa.
I have an interesting question from a fan, if you don’t mind. Nicholas in Peoria, Illinois, asks: "Please settle this ongoing debate from our Lost party last night. First, what did Jacob say to Hurley when Hurley was lost in the jungle by the house? Second, in the third-season finale, with Jack's flash-forward, didn't one of the doctors ask, 'Do you wanna go upstairs and talk to your dad?' So, would that mean more people are dying and coming back in the Lost universe? That would explain Jack's dad on the Island."
For the first part, um, let me look at my script to make sure...But yeah, there wasn’t anything in the script as far as what was being said. That was just jungle whispering. I don’t know if it was Jacob or the jungle or whatever, but it’s just whispering. I’m sure some guy somewhere will figure it out, like the guys who figured out what Shannon and Walt said.
As for the second part, did someone really say that to Jack? I didn’t know that. Maybe that was sort of a red herring to throw people off the scent of that being a flash-forward. I really don’t know. But I do know that the producers have said that when someone dies, they really do die. They are dead.
Do you feel like last night’s episode was representative of how good the next s
